As I originally posted on the Advanced Discovery blog , the conference is less than a week away and it’s not too late to register. In-person attendance costs only $99, and an online live stream is available for $49. And if you’re a university or college faculty, professional staff, judicial officials, clerk or employee of a government bodies and agency, attendance is free.
The title of this year’s conference is Curing Your Data Demons With Simple and Handy Analytic Tools and the focus is to provide a pathway for attorneys, paralegals and support professionals to move beyond simple keyword searching to basic data analytics. Multiple sessions will demonstrate the use of simple tools, such as near duplicates analysis, automatic document grouping, document clustering, and the magical process of finding “more like this.”
Before the general sessions, the Conference will feature a special kick off in the morning with Craig Ball speaking on the 9 e-discovery skills every litigator and trial attorney must have. For those who haven’t heard about it, Craig will be referencing the California Bar Ethical Opinion of last year, which held that, with regard to his or her own clients ESI, every California attorney must be able to:
- initially assess e-discovery needs and issues, if any;
- implement/cause to implement appropriate ESI preservation procedures;
- analyze and understand a client’s ESI systems and storage;
- identify custodians of relevant ESI; ·
- perform data searches;
- collect responsive ESI in a manner that preserves the integrity of that ESI;
- advise the client on available options for collection and preservation of ESI; and
- engage in competent and meaningful meet and confer with opposing counsel concerning an e-discovery plan
The ethical focus will continue at lunch time with a special luncheon address by the Hon. Ralph Artigliere on emerging e-discovery ethics. Judge Artigliere retired as a Circuit Judge from Florida’s Tenth Judicial Circuit in Bartow to teach and write. Before his appointment to the bench in 2001 by Governor Bush, Judge Artigliere was in private practice where he tried primarily professional negligence matters.
This year there is also a new judges panel featuring Florida State Court Judge Gill Freeman (Miami), US Magistrate Judges Gary Jones (N.D. Fla.), William Matthewman (S.D. Fla.), and Anthony Porcelli (M.D. Fla.) discussing the e-discovery competency courts should expect from attorneys.
The general sessions will include national experts from around the nation drawn from leading law firms, vendors and corporate legal departments, discussing not only the basics of e-discovery competency in 2016, but also a variety of new tools available in the world of ESI analytics.
Two of those sessions will include Advanced Discovery experts. Canaan Himmelbaum, Vice President of Business Development, will be on the 3:00PM panel entitled Who Says TAR is Only for Litigation Giants, focusing on TAR for small cases; and yours truly Tom O’Connor will be on the 2:00PM panel called Similarity Takes Us Below the Surface, discussing similarity search tools and techniques.
