Jazz Fest Week One Recap

Friday it poured, Saturday waas cloudy and day three was a glorious sunny Sunday at the fairgrounds.

Highlights for me included Levon Helm being  joined by Dr. John, Alan Toussiant and Ivan Neville,  seeing Tab Benoit in several places including the group he founded , the Save The Wetlands All Stars which includes Cyrille Neville, Anders Osborne, Johnny Sansone and of course Dr. John.

Gayle saw Simon and Garfunkel and said they wre likewise fabulous, with Rockin Dopsie JR joining them for Cecilia. And the hardest choice of the weekend was whetehr to see Rockin and his brothers play a tribute to their dad in the Blues Tent at the same time as the incomparable Leah Chase was singing in the Jazz Tent and paying tribute to the late, great Marva Wright.

Good thing I had my sneakers on!!

Also great were The Radiators (duh!!) doing a set of songs all written before WWII, proving that our generation may have invented rock n roll but it didn’t invent rockin and Marcia Ball, who always does a high paced energetic set.

Oh yes, the food was great: crawfish monica, peach cobbler, strawberry shortcake, crawfish pies, gator pies ….. and on and on and on. So that’s it for now, resting up for the second weekend with Sonny Landreth, Jeff Beck, Van Morrison, the Rads and The Neville Brothers.

Peace love and crawfish y’all.
